Why should I have under Floor Heating?
Electrical Underfloor heating is fast becoming the most popular form of heating. In most forms, it is inexpensive to install, economical to run, there is no maintenance and above all, the heat distribution is total.
Using thermostats in separately controlled zones throughout the house, you can easily control the heat to each room and keep your heating costs to an absolute minimum.
The electrical mats can be installed under almost every floor type, including Lvt’s, wood, Ceramic tile + many more making it ideal for refurbishment projects.
It offers greater comfort and flexibility than a traditional radiator system, which can give your room cold spots, you can have heat differences of 4°C within your room.
Underfloor heating is normally efficient because it effectively turns the whole floor into a radiator. The large surface area means it doesn’t have to be a high temperature to warm the room – only a couple of degrees warmer than normal room temperature. … It uses 15-40% less energy than a traditional radiator.

Efficient to use
It doesn’t take up wall space or dictate where you have to place furniture
As heat rises it gives an even distribution of heat
No cold spots where the radiators output can’t reach
Warm feet
Silent operation
Maintenance free
FAQs
How does it work?
The amount of heat depends entirely on the possible output of the cable and the heat settings you use on the thermostat. A sensor, connected to the thermostat, is also placed under the floor with the mat. The sensor measures the temperature of the floor and tells the control box to start and stop the heating to ensure it stays at the temperature you have set. For a heating mat to go under Lvt’s we would recommend not exceeding maximum wattage of 160W per m2.
How much does it cost to run?
The estimated cost for a 10m² system running for four hours a day is 84.3p, or roughly £5.90 per week, this assumes you keep the same routine across the whole week. If you’re looking to expand that to a monthly figure, this will bring you to around £23.60 per month.
What will be the height of the new floor?
Wooden subfloors Normally approx. 18mm – 22mm depending on the condition of your floor.
6mm Backer boards secured / screwed with washers or 6-9mm plywood ( typically 6mm ), always cover the underfloor heating system with a 10mm deep layer of self-levelling compound, then your Lvt floor ( 2.5mm )
Since wood acts as a natural insulator, you can install your floor heating system directly on a plywood sub-floor.
Concrete subfloors Normally approx 20mm
Backer boards bedded / secured in tile adhesive ( typically 6-8mm), always cover the underfloor heating system with a 10mm deep layer of self-levelling compound, then your Lvt floor ( 2.5mm )to protect the system from moisture before the vinyl flooring is laid down.
Why do I need to have a Backer / Thermal board?
Insulating the floor first will stop any heat going downwards and reflect it all back up and give you greater value for money.
The insulation increases the efficiency of the underfloor heating system used. It will take less electricity to maintain your floor temperature setting.
Concrete subfloor… If you are fitting heating to an un-insulated floor then the use of insulation boards is especially important.
Wooden subfloors… Insulated tile backer boards can be as thin as 6mm and when stuck to the floor offer great insulation and a very firm base. If installed properly these backer boards can replace plywood strengthening panels on timber floors. This then gives you the rigidity you require from a timber floor plus insulation. This is very important when laying tiles onto a timber floor with underfloor heating.
What temperature should I set it at?
This varies from person-to-person, but generally 21°C is the ideal temperature for living areas. Bedrooms tend to be set slightly cooler at 18°C. You can set this using your underfloor heating control panel.
… As a general rule of thumb, your heated floor shouldn’t feel hot – it should just not feel cold.
Can I have UFH in wet areas?
Yes
It can be installed in wet rooms with vinyl floors. … Remember to always cover the underfloor heating system with a 10mm deep layer of self-levelling compound to protect the system from moisture before the vinyl flooring is laid down.
How long before I can switch it on after completion?
7 days
You should wait at least 7 days after laying the flooring before switching on the underfloor heating and even then it’s best to start at a low temperature and incrementally increase it by a few °C each day until you reach the operational temperature.

Installation
Why do we also fit electrical underfloor heating?
Because of customers in the past experiencing problems and their wish for ONE company to install it all correctly & efficiently . Please see below a typical conversation.
We arrive to fit the floor but we’re not happy with the subfloor preparation that the electrician did, we cannot guarantee the floor as we cannot guarantee the electricians work, the electrician will rightly not guarantee our work, where does this leave the customer who just wants what they paid for & for it to be guaranteed?
With respect to some electricians, they are not floorlayers so won’t know what subfloor preparation we need.
This is how it works.
- A simple estimate for the flooring, this would include the backer boards, latex screed, flooring product & installation.
- We then organise for a qualified electrician to visit site to determine what is required and any problems they can foresee.
- A final estimate is then sent out which includes everything.
- The floorlaying team will carry out all subfloor preparation work.
- The electrician will install the matting / sensors etc & test the cable.
- We then apply the flexible fibre screed & fit the floorcovering.
- The electrician then connects & certifies.
- One invoice from ourselves which incorporates a full guarantee for the complete installation.
